Earth Month: How you can be more sustainable at home.

Earth Month: How you can be more sustainable at home.

Earth Month is the perfect time to reflect on our daily practices and make changes to live in a more sustainable way. One area where we can make an impact is in our homes.

At Huha, we're passionate about finding ways to reuse what we already have to be more sustainable; let’s talk about it!

Glass Jar

The humble glass jar is an ideal eco-friendly option for household needs. They can be used for food storage, drinkware, flower vases, organizers, terrariums, and DIY gifts. They're super easy to clean and prepare for reuse.

  1. Remove any remaining food or liquid from the jar by rinsing it with hot water. You can use a bottle brush and olive oil to remove stubborn residue.
  2. Make it yours!

Composting

Composting is another great way to promote sustainable living practices. We understand that composting in an apartment can be challenging, but it is definitely possible. We've compiled some tips for you:

  • Indoor composting bin: Small and odor-free, great for apartment living; purchase, or make your own.
  • Vermicomposting: Uses worms to break down food scraps in a small container; purchase a kit or make your own.
  • Bokashi composting: Uses anaerobic bacteria to break down food scraps in a small container; purchase a kit or make your own.
  • Community composting: Check with your local community for composting programs or bins where residents can drop off food scraps.

Have you received Huha's NEW mailers yet?! They launched this month and are compostable, biodegradable and reusable! Learn more HERE.

Upcycling & natural dyes

Upcycling clothes is another way to reduce waste, lessen the fashion industry's environmental impact and save some money along the way. Did you know natural dyes have a lower environmental impact and can give clothing a second life? Here’s the exciting part, you can use avocado skins and pits to create a beautiful blush dye!

Follow these steps to turn your avocado scraps into a natural dye and give them a second life before popping them in the compost:

  1. Prepare: Collect avocado pits and skins by placing them in a bag or container in your freezer.
  2. Clean and chop: Clean the pits and skins by rinsing them in water.
  3. Boil the mixture: Add enough water to cover the pits and skins in a pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour.
  4. Strain the mixture: Once the hour has passed, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool. Strain the mixture through a sieve or cheesecloth, collecting the liquid in a separate container.
  5. Add fabric: Immerse the laundered fabric you want to dye into the avocado liquid. Make sure it's fully submerged.
  6. Stir and sit: Stir constantly for the first two minutes, then let the fabric sit for one hour, stirring every ten minutes.
  7. Rinse and dry: After the fabric has been dyed to your liking, rinse it in cold water until it is clear. Hang the fabric to dry in a shaded area, avoiding direct sunlight.
  8. Style & enjoy!
