You know that small triangle of fabric floating in the bottom of your underwear? That’s a gusset—or at least a type of gusset. And it’s time we talk about it.
What’s a gusset?
Technically speaking, a gusset is an extra layer of fabric sewn into the crotch of underwear for additional reinforcement. It’s intended to collect moisture (like discharge and sweat) to keep you dry and protect the outer layer of your undies from staining and wear. Gussets are often made of cotton—even if the outer fabric is synthetic—to provide a layer of breathability and to cushion your sensitive regions against irritating fabrics like lace and polyester.
But not all gussets are created equal…
The problem with gussets
The gussets in typical women’s underwear are often too small to cover what they’re supposed to (hello lip slips), exposing your most sensitive areas to irritating fabrics and seams. Without enough coverage, they don’t do a great job allowing things to breathe either—which means discomfort for you and optimal conditions for bacteria growth.
This tiny piece of fabric is expected to do a lot of heavy lifting, compensating for the suffocating synthetics (like nylon and polyester) that likely make up your undies’ shell. Since these fabrics hold onto oil, bacteria, and odor even after laundering, your gusset inevitably falls short.
Synthetic fabrics + tiny gussets = a hot mess (literally).
That’s why we created Mineral Undies™.
The benefits of breathability
At Huha, our undies—not just our gussets—are made from tree-derived TENCEL™ fibers, known to be even softer and more breathable than regular cotton.
Breathability is a combination of a fabric’s moisture-wicking, temperature control, and airflow capabilities. The more breathable a fabric, the less conducive it is to bacterial growth—including the kinds of bacteria related to odors, UTIs, and other infections.
But we go a couple steps further…
To create our unique-to-us lining, we knit breathable lyocell with zinc oxide—a naturally antimicrobial mineral known to soothe skin and keep bacteria at bay. The result is a functional fabric that keeps you (and your undies) feeling fresher, longer.
Thoughtful design
Our signature green gussets are wider and longer, keeping you covered from every angle whether you’re lounging or lunging. Plus, they’re securely sewn in for your comfort—unlike the ‘floating’ or pocket-like gussets you’re used to (it’s cheaper in production to omit that final seam). While some brands claim to use a floating gusset to avoid seams in uncomfortable places, this isn’t an issue with our full-coverage lining.
Why are our gussets green?
While we love our signature HUHA™ green, this color serves a practical purpose! Since green tones neutralize red tones, our green gussets help minimize and mask period stains.
You might notice that some of our limited edition colorways come with a pale, off-white gusset. This undyed fabric (known as greige fabric) is a great option for those with particular sensitivities to dyes. Not to worry, though—these styles still contain our antimicrobial zinc oxide technology.
